Escalator Safety: Understanding and Addressing Step-Related Gaps

At Fuji Elevator Company, safety is our top priority. As part of our commitment to providing the highest quality and safest escalators, we want to shed light on an often-overlooked aspect of escalator safety: step-related gaps. Understanding these gaps and how to manage them effectively is crucial for preventing accidents and ensuring smooth, reliable operation.

#### What Are Step-Related Gaps?

Step-related gaps are spaces that can form between various components of an escalator, such as:

1. **Gap Between Steps**: The space between two adjacent steps.
2. **Gap Between Steps and the Apron Plate**: The space between the steps and the apron plate.
3. **Gap Between Steps and the Comb Plate**: The space between the step tread grooves and the comb plate teeth.

These gaps can pose significant risks if not properly managed. They have the potential to trap small objects, or worse, fingers and toes, leading to equipment damage or personal injury.

#### Common Problems and Causes

**1. Gap Between Steps**
- **Issue**: Over time, the gap between steps can exceed the maximum allowable limit of 6mm specified in GB 16899-2011.
- **Causes**: This often results from step chain elongation, damage to steps, and wear on step rollers. Dynamic shifts during operation can also exacerbate the problem, leading to further risks.

**2. Gap Between Steps and the Apron Plate**
- **Issue**: Gaps here can exceed the recommended maximum horizontal gap of 4mm and a total gap of 7mm.
- **Causes**: Common causes include deformation or displacement of the apron plate due to external impacts, step damage, and wear of supporting components like the step shaft and chain.

**3. Gap Between Steps and the Comb Plate**
- **Issue**: This gap should not exceed 4mm. Larger gaps can lead to friction and wear on both the comb plate and step tread grooves.
- **Causes**: Damage to step tread grooves or comb plate teeth, misalignment, and dynamic wear during operation are common factors.

#### Effective Measures to Address Step-Related Gaps

**1. Strengthen Safety Management**
- **Installation**: Adhere strictly to safety specifications during installation. Conduct comprehensive quality checks to ensure gaps are within safe limits.
- **Maintenance**: Regular inspections are vital. Address any excessive gaps promptly through repair or replacement of damaged parts.
- **User Awareness**: Educate the public on safe escalator use. Display clear safety instructions and enforce practices to prevent misuse.

**2. Technical Improvements**
- **Design Enhancements**: Innovate with designs that include automatic gap compensation features. For example, steps with built-in mechanisms can adjust gaps dynamically, reducing risks associated with apron plate displacement.
- **Optimized Components**: Improve structural elements like step roller guides. Our design approach features a horizontal L-shaped bottom rail to minimize step misalignment and an upper rail to prevent steps from lifting, thus reducing gap-related risks.
